CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell was named a reserve All-Star for the Eastern Conference as well as the conference’s Player of the Month for January Thursday.
It is the fifth All-Star selection for Mitchell, who won Player of the Month honors for a second time in his career, the first with the Cavs.
On the season, Mitchell is averaging a team-best 28.2 points, which ranks seventh-best in the NBA, a career-high 5.5 rebounds, a career-high 6.4 assists, and a career-high 1.92 steals, which ranks second leaguewide.
Mitchell, in his seventh season, is one of two players this season averaging at least 25.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game joining Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Mitchell has scored 20 points or more in 33 of his 36 games this season, including 30-plus points 15 times and four 40-point efforts, while posting a career-high six double-doubles.
With Thursday night's selection, Mitchell becomes just the ninth player in franchise history to be selected to the All-Star Game on multiple occasions, joining LeBron James (10 times), Brad Daugherty (five times), Kyrie Irving (four times), Mark Price (four times), Terrell Brandon (two times), Zydrunas Ilgauskas (two times), John Johnson (two times) and Larry Nance Sr. (two times).
The voting for reserves was done by NBA head coaches for their respective conferences.
Mitchell also joined James as the only Cavs players to win the Player of the Month award after he averaged 28.6 points, 7.6 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game to help the Cavs go 11-2 for the month of January..
Suns guard Devin Booker won Player of the Month honors for the West.
Coming off a 45-point performance Wednesday night against the Pistons from Mitchell that saw him score 20 in the fourth quarter, the Cavs are 29-16, including an NBA-best 16-4 since December 16.
