CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Indians starting pitcher Aaron Civale will be sidelined 4-5 weeks after being diagnosed with a sprained right middle finger on Wednesday the team announced.
Civale underwent an MRI Wednesday morning during a visit to orthopedic specialist Dr. Thomas Graham in Dayton.
Civale will be shut down from throwing for 1-2 weeks the team said.
A roster move to replace Civale, who is headed to the injured list, is expected to be made in the coming days.
Civale left Monday night’s 4-0 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field in the fifth inning due to the injury.
The loss of Civale means that Cleveland’s entire opening day starting rotation has been wiped out due to injury or they are down at Triple-A.
Cleveland lost 2020 Cy Young winner Shane Bieber to a shoulder strain on June 13 and Zach Plesac on May 24 due to a broken right thumb.
Logan Allen is off the Triple-A injured list and could be called up. Triston McKenzie, who was sent down to work on his command, could also be recalled.
Manager Terry Francona said Tuesday that he will start J.C. Mejia Thursday night against the Twins followed by Cal Quantril Friday, Sam Hentges Saturday, Eli Morgan Sunday and Monday’s starter will be determined later.
