The Washington Commanders are acquiring veteran quarterback Carson Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts.
The trade package includes two third-round picks going to the Colts and a swap of second-round picks in the upcoming draft, with Washington agreeing to pay the full $28 million owed to Wentz in 2022 (including a $5 million roster bonus that's due next week). Wentz is signed through the 2024 season with a potential out after 2022.
Per Schefter, the 2023 third-round pick the Colts receive would convert into a second-round pick if Wentz plays 70 percent of Washington's offensive snaps in 2022. Washington and Indy also swapped second-round picks in 2022, with Washington moving back to 47 from 42.
Commanders get:
*Carson Wentz
*2022 second-round pick
Colts get:
*2022 third-round pick
*2023 third-round pick that can convert into a second-round pick if Wentz plays 70 percent of Washington's offensive plays
*2022 second-round pick
Wentz, 29, threw for 3,563 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Colts last season, his first in Indianapolis after being traded by the Eagles in March 2021. Two NFL teams have now moved on from the former first-round pick (2nd overall, 2016).
The deal won't become official until the start of the new league year, next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
