NFL Draft Rumor: De facto GM Eliot Wolf reportedly ‘pushing hard’ for Patriots to draft QB J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 3

jones & mego: Do you trust this Patriots staff with a young QB?

As NFL Draft month begins, the rumor mill continues to turn around the league and as a result, smoke screen season is in full swing.

The latest nugget surrounding the Patriots? According to Sportkeeda's Tony Pauline, the team (and specifically Eliot Wolf) may have their eyes on Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy at the top of the draft:

"I'm not big on McCarthy being a top-10 selection, but the UM signal caller to New England was the buzz on the pro-day circuit," Pauline wrote on Monday as he placed McCarthy to the Patriots at pick No. 3 in his latest mock draft.

He continued: "De facto general manager Eliot Wolf is pushing hard for McCarthy, and he believes he has as much upside as any quarterback in this draft."

The Patriots had a large contingent at McCarthy's Pro Day on March 22, a group that included head coach Jerod Mayo, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, and Eliot Wolf. New England also met with McCarthy at the NFL Combine back in February.

Through 28 games as Michigan's starting quarterback over the last two seasons, McCarthy's Wolverines went 27-1 and won the 2023-24 National Championship. He threw 44 touchdowns and 9 interceptions along the way.

McCarthy, just 21 years old, measured in at 6-foot-2 1/2, 219 pounds at the Combine.
