The Jets are fighting to stay relevant, while the Giants have seemingly already lost that chance this season. Meanwhile, the Yankees and Mets recently finished two of their most disappointing seasons in recent memory, despite sky-high expectations.
Gio is convinced that no major city in the country has it worse than New York when it comes to sports right now.
“I think - I’m pretty confident in saying - that we have it worse than anybody,” Gio said. “Chicago right now is bad, don’t get me wrong...they had championships there in the not-too-distant past with the Blackhawks and the Cubs. They had a dynasty with their hockey team and one of the great stories in baseball history.
“Philadelphia, let’s not even talk about that. They are on a run of all runs right now…we are, right now, once again, as far as the big cities go with sports, New York is the worst again. The pits again.”
Los Angeles certainly isn’t a candidate thanks to recent championship success from the likes of the Rams, Dodgers, and Lakers, while the Miami area has had teams like the Heat and Panthers in championships in the past year. Texas’ big cities have both of their teams in the ALCS right now. Boston football and baseball are at a bottom, but the Bruins are competitive every year, and the Celtics are a legit contender in the Eastern Conference.
So, New York feels like it’s at the bottom.
“We are the worst big sports town in America right now,” Gio said. “Based on how the teams are performing.”
