Hal Steinbrenner shares his father’s yearly goal of winning a World Series as owner of the Yankees, but he does share one key difference with George.
If the season doesn’t end with a title, Hal doesn’t see it as a clear failure.
“I’ve always said out ultimate goal is to win a championship, and if that doesn’t happen, we have failed in that goal,” Hal told Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of the New York Post on the latest episode of The Show. “But no, I’m not gonna look back at the season and say it was a failure. I’m not gonna look at last year and the amount of games we won and say it was a failure, or that we won a Division Series. I’m not gonna say that’s a failure. But in our ultimate goal, we clearly failed.”
George was famously black and white when it came to expectations for his team, declaring every year World Series or bust. Hal carries a similar philosophy, but he doesn’t see a season like 2022 as a failure, considering it ended with a division title and a trip to the ALCS.
“My family puts a lot of resources every year in trying to accomplish that,” Hal said of the Yankees’ goal of winning their first championship since 2009. “If we don’t accomplish that, then we did fail in that goal. But that doesn’t make the whole season a failure. We differ in that.”
