VIEW FROM WASHINGTON DC: Should the Commanders look at Kareem Hunt as RB depth?

Running back seems to be an area of “need,” or at least something Ron Rivera wants to focus on, as the Commanders navigate the draft process and any further free agency coming up this summer.

On Tuesday, that led the Sports Junkies from 106.7 The Fan to wonder: should they look at Kareem Hunt, one of the top backs left in free agency and someone who played for new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy years ago in KC?

The Browns have Nick Chubb and don’t seem interested in a Hunt reunion, but the former Pro Bowler accrued 2,847 scrimmage yards and 23 touchdowns in 49 games as Chubb’s No. 2 the last three seasons, and is still just going to be 28 years old this season.

“There’s still a lot of name running backs out there,” Cakes said, before explaining to the guys how the Browns have used Hunt over the last couple years.

“What I’m shocked at is five touchdowns on 78 carries,” EB said, looking at Hunt’s 2021 season, before Cakes jumped in to rain on the parade.

“I don’t think the Commanders are going to be interested in him, even if Bieniemy coached him in the past,” JP said. “You say it all the time: you can find young running backs. He’s on the decline and didn’t even average four yards a carry…goodbye.”

Cakes, however, had an idea.

“If Bieniemy really likes his skill set, and thinks he still has something left, I don’t mind a one-year, relatively low-money deal,” he said. “His market is super soft right now. You could pick a running back in the third or fourth round like this team likes to do, but he has a level of comfort with Bieniemy.”

Bieniemy was Hunt’s OC in Kansas City when Hunt 1,782 scrimmage yards and 11 TD as a rookie, and with Antonio Gibson in a contract year, perhaps they can find something there with both playing for a new deal?

Maybe, but Jason Bishop isn’t buying it as a good move for the Commanders.

“Clearly the Commanders want a running back, and I feel like all these veteran guys are going to give you about the same,” Bish said, “but if you can get a little bit younger in the draft, why not try it?”

Running back is a young man’s position, for sure…and all this talk led to the Junkies then wondering if maybe youth football parents will shy their kids away from playing running back because of that?
