It seems like Mitch Trubisky is comfortable being Kenny Pickett’s backup.
Steelers General Manager Omar Khan said on the Pat McAfee Show Thursday that they are going to extend the former second-overall draft pick in 2017.
"We're finishing up an extension with Mitch Trubisky and that will be done here shortly,” Khan told McAfee.
Trubisky is set to make $8 million this season with Pittsburgh, so an extension could free up some cap money this year for the team with a restructure.
The 28-year-old started the first four games of the season for the Steelers before being pulled at halftime in Week 4, in favor of rookie Kenny Pickett.
Trubisky talked started Week 15, a win against the Carolina Panthers 24-16.
The news may come as a surprise to some, with the Steelers confirming that Mason Rudolph has also signed a one-year extension this week after it was assumed he wouldn’t be returning.
After the signing, it was speculated by some that the Steelers could trade Trubisky to a team that needs a quarterback, especially if one gets hurt in the preseason.
