The 4:00 deadline has passed, and according to multiple reports, the Giants and Saquon Barkley failed to reach a new agreement on a contract.
Barkley, shortly after the deadline passed, tweeted "It is what is is," seemingly in response to the news.
The two sides didn't appear to be any closer to an agreement as the deadline neared, with the Giants seemingly comfortable with Barkley playing the upcoming season under the franchise tag. Barkley doesn't want to play under the tag, and could sit out all of training camp without getting fined because he hasn't signed the tag, but all eyes will now be on whether Barkley will sit out of games.
Barkley returned to being a 1,000-yard rusher last season and was seeking more than the roughly $10 million he will make under the tag, but the Giants stood pat.
The Giants could rescind the franchise tag and make Barkley a free agent, but given Barkley's value to the offense last season, that seems unlikely.
