What will happen?
The Brandon Aiyuk saga continues to drag on but there appear to be two options remaining.
The star wide receiver will either re-sign with the San Francisco 49ers or, they will trade him to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As of Wednesday morning, here is were we stand, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
The Steelers are currently in waiting mode, with a deal in place that would bring Aiyuk to Pittsburgh.
Fowler says trade talks “were quiet in recent days” because the 49ers are trying to decide “whether to extend the WR at a price point he would accept.”
It’s now just a matter of time. Aiyuk is trying to get paid in San Francisco, but they haven’t offered him a price that he is willing to take to stay with the Niners, at least not yet.
The frustrating part for fans is that a deal is reportedly done and as Fowler says all of the details are in place and a trade is just “one phone call away”.
Post-Gazette Steelers reporter Ray Fittipaldo tells The Fan Morning Show, “the Steelers have had their offer on the table, they’re very comfortable with it and they’re just waiting on the 49ers, it’s a holding pattern for the Steelers.”
There were reports on Tuesday that the 49ers and Aiyuk are close on a deal that would keep him in San Fran, but Fittipaldo says it would be a surprise to him he if stays.
“To me, that’s a very strange way for the 49ers to get to that number,” said Fittipaldo. “Basically, piss him off for six month and cave at the last minute.”
Former 49ers WR and Hall of Famer Jerry Rice posted to Instagram indicating a resolution will come Wednesday.
As Tom Petty said, the waiting is the hardest part.
