PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Mike Tomlin said he feels comfortable with Mitch Trubisky at quarterback, but there is something Trubisky wants and it doesn’t speak well of the offense.
“We got to show some more heart,” Trubisky said. “More heart will help this offense.”
That’s a pretty powerful statement from the back-up quarterback. Someone who has seen a lot of football. Someone who has seen the good first-hand in Buffalo and been a part of good and bad in Chicago.
“It’s a multitude of things, number one thing whatever play comes in, all 11 guys have to be on the same page,” Trubisky said. “For me, what I’ve been seeing from the sidelines, we got to stay ahead of the chains. Stay out of those third-and-long situations. When you get in the red zone, score.”
“It sounds pretty obvious, but it’s easier said than done. We just got to go out there and execute, all 11 guys on the same page.”
We don’t yet know the status of starter Kenny Pickett. Trubisky said he hated to see him go down like that at the end of the third quarter. He said regardless of his status for Sunday against Baltimore they will prepare as they always do. He said he feels comfortable and this is why the Steelers wanted him back, for situations like these. He doesn’t anticipate much changing in the offense with him in there.
Along with having 11 players on the same page, Trubisky added a little more detail as to what he saw and then experienced in the fourth quarter about the Steelers offense.
“We got the run game going, but a little too late at the end,” Trubisky said. “We have to start games faster. We got to stay ahead of the chains and stay away from third and long situations and come away with some touchdowns. A defense like that, that is fundamentality sound and they are keeping everything in front, sometimes you have to dink and dunk to move the ball up the field.”
“You have to execute better than they are. I thought they did a great job, obviously well coached on defense. We got to be better this week.”
The 29-year-old former first-round pick said no one if obviously feeling good about themselves, but it’s professional football. You are going to go through adversity, as he said you have to be resilient in this league, strap your boots back up and go to work. He also used the phrase ‘pull together and do some better things next week’.
“We got to learn from this one and look in the mirror and be ready to go, Trubisky said. “We got to flush it, go back to work and get on this week.”
