Appearing as a guest on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, former NFL quarterback and current NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms revealed he hasn’t returned to his alma mater, the University of Texas, in almost 20 years. And it doesn’t sound like he has any plans to go back.

“There’s some weirdness between me and Texas,” Simms acknowledged. “They mistreated me in some ways.”

Simms, who spent eight seasons in the NFL with Tampa Bay, Denver and Tennessee, felt he was never truly embraced by the Longhorns fanbase, who preferred his teammate—and primary competition at quarterback—Major Applewhite.

“I didn’t necessarily love the way Major Applewhite treated me early on in my career there. We ended off on a good note. But yeah, it bothered me. And it bothered me that for the majority of my time there I always got viewed as the Yankee,” admitted Simms, lamenting how UT diehards held his Northeast upbringing against him. “The fan base favored Major Applewhite even though I don’t think anyone would debate that I was the leader of the team, the hardest worker, the guy getting the 7-on-7s together and, of course, the more talented one.”

Despite the success he had there, finishing as the sixth-leading passer in school history, Simms still harbors resentment all these years later. “I am bitter at the Texas fans still and it would be hard for me to go back, I’m not going to lie. I lost to Oklahoma and came back and my car had the word ‘Yankee’ keyed in the side of the left two doors. It was just always s--- like that,” said Simms, still scarred by his turbulent four-year stint in Austin. “I had a great time there. It was a great school. I had great friends. But yeah, there were some times there where I don’t think the coaching staff handled the Major Applewhite and me situation correctly. And if you’re a fan of Texas, you’re not a fan if you root for the team when Major’s the quarterback and root against it when I’m the quarterback.”
