Five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood says he wants to be a “hometown hero.”
The No. 1 overall prospect in the class of 2025, from Belleville — less than 20 miles east of Ann Arbor — announced in a video posted to social media Thursday that he has flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan.
The video, captioned “Hometown. Hero,” features Kanye West’s song “Homecoming” and a clip of a young Underwood saying he’s going to “bring my talent to the Michigan Wolverines.”
Years later, that has come true, as the 6-foot-4, 210-lb. QB becomes the highest-rated commit in the history of the Michigan football program.
His flip from LSU — to which he committed in early January — is the latest shakeup in the QB class, as five-star QB Julian Lewis decommitted from USC and on Thursday committed to Colorado.
Michigan kept the pressure on to land Underwood, who last week even seemingly made a post indicating he would turn down a lucrative NIL package worth reported millions of dollars, saying “the No. 1 overall prospect… is unlikely to accept” the offer.
The post was subsequently deleted.
The Detroit Free Press reported Thursday that as of last Week, Michigan had reportedly offered a four-year NIL deal worth nearly $10 million over four seasons and included win-based and championship-based incentives.
“At this time, it's not clear if the Wolverines and their collective increased their offer, if Underwood had a change of heart or something else,” the Freep’s story on Underwood’s commitment said.
His commitment comes at a crucial time for the Wolverines, who have had lackluster quarterback play in a 5-5 start to the season in Sherrone Moore’s first season at the helm on the heels of winning last year’s national championship.
Underwood and Belleville won the 2022 MHSAA Division 1 state championship before being upset last year in the title game by Southfield A&T. Last week the Tigers were knocked out of the playoffs in the regional finals by Detroit Catholic Central.
Moore seemingly celebrated the commitment with a post on X.
