ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The XFL and the USFL announced Thursday an intention to merge both spring football leagues.

"Subject to customary regulatory approvals and if the transaction is consummated, the new league will establish best-in-class operations based on the most recent seasons of both leagues," both leagues said in a joint statement, "This historic combination will anchor professional spring football with substantial capabilities and resources to ensure future growth and continue to enhance the development of the collective players, coaches, and staff that are coming together."

AXIOS first reported that both leagues were under serious discussions on a merger.

The hope is the new league will reportedly begin in 2024.

Both spring football leagues suffered financial losses since their returns. The XFL, owned actor and former WWE Wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, reportedly lost $60 million, while the USFL owned by FOX, had an average viewership that trailed the 2020 version of the XFL.

The USFL and XFL say that more details regarding the new league will be announced at a later date.
