Surviving a period with literally NO SPORTS while registering some the highest annual listening results (ratings) in America, using creative road equipment arrangements and plexiglass to keep the party going while telling the story of Memphis and carrying the torch for the Grizzlies, the Tigers, and the City of Memphis, has once again led to a Marconi nomination for 92.9 FM ESPN (WMFS)-Memphis.
92.9 FM ESPN-Memphis (WMFS) was nominated along with WIP-FM, Philadelphia, PA., KXNO-AM Des Moines, IA, KTCK-AM, Dallas, TX., & WXYT-FM, Detroit, MI. for 2021.
With leading voices from ESPN and Geoff Calkins in the morning, to midday characters Jason & John telling the story of the Tigers, Giannotto and Jeffrey keeping it real on the Grizzlies, and America’s #1 college basketball guru Gary Parrish live in the afternoon, the real authentic Memphis stories, stylistic differences in programming and fun once again translated in 2020-21 at a national level. The listeners, advertisers, staff, and Memphis teams that support 92.9 made it happen.
Of course 2020-21 has been unlike any other in sports history and the world. 92.9 FM ESPN debuted “Free Commercial Friday” for struggling business during the pandemic. 92.9 saluted local seniors who had their school experiences cut short due to covid.
In the past year WMFS has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars with organizations making a big difference in Memphis like Church Health, the Memphis Food Bank (during the heart of the pandemic), along with local charities like SRVS and their 2020-21 SRVS Sparkling Nights event.
Of course 92.9 FM ESPN has always been an original in America while carrying the load on the biggest stories of the day. Whether it's the Grizzlies beating the Warriors to get the #8 seed in 2021 on Flagship 92.9, managing the lead on today's stories about the local WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational, or focusing on conference expansion and it's implications for the University of Memphis and the region.
