DeMarcus Lawrence's agent speaks on Cowboys future

The Dallas Cowboys and DeMarcus Lawrence will have a lot to talk about over the coming weeks, and according to his agent David Canter, those conversations are largely positive.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, during a visit with 105.3 The Fan's Shan & RJ on Thursday, Canter revealed to Shan, RJ and Bobby that Lawrence is healthy and ready to play football.

Unfortunately, however, he is also a free agent.

"Demarcus Lawrence is going to continue to play football. We've never talked to ‘R’ word (retirement)," Canter told Shan and RJ. "It's never been in our vernacular. You know, DeMarcus was healthy towards the end of the year, but it just didn't make sense to come back with the season, kind of lost, unfortunately, you know. So he's 100% healthy. Good news, 100% healthy. Bad news, he's a free agent, right? So for Dallas Cowboys fans who love the DeMarcus Lawrence, there is a possibility that he leaves."

Lawrence, of course, missed the vast majority of the season in 2024 with an injury, playing in just four games. That said, he also had three sacks and 14 tackles in those four outings, signifying that when on the field, he can still get it done.

And though Lawrence has gotten the stigma of being a perennially injured player, he did not miss a game in 2023 or 2024. And outside of 2016, 2021 and 2024, he has largely stayed on the field for the majority of each season.

Either way, it appears that based on Canter's comments, Lawrence would prefer to stay in Dallas and return to the Cowboys.

But if that is going to happen, the ball is firmly in Dallas' court.

"I'm optimistic with our conversations with the Cowboys, that they're very aware of what it'll take to keep DeMarcus a cowboy," Canter said. "Honestly, that's up to them it's not up to us."
