The season came to an abrupt end Wednesday night for the Memphis Tigers men's basketball, falling 81-69 to Tulane in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference tournament. The loss capped a frustrating year for head coach Penny Hardaway, whose program now enters one of the most important off-seasons since he took over his alma mater.
Because of that, the focus now shifts to what changes could be coming. Hardaway has built strong recruiting classes in the past and leaned heavily on the transfer portal, but many around the program expect potential staff adjustments this spring. Adding an experienced offensive coordinator or veteran defensive strategist could help stabilize the system and bring more structure to the team’s style of play.
There’s also the roster. Will Memphis hire a roster building GM? The portal will again be a major storyline as Memphis tries to reshape the lineup with shooters and experienced guards.
Hardaway has led Memphis to multiple NCAA tournament appearances during his tenure, but with fan expectations high and pressure mounting, the coming months could determine the future direction of Tiger basketball.
