DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Cowboys will hold a punting competition at training camp (in Oxnard?) this summer as they have signed Bryan Anger to a one-year deal, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Anger will face off with Hunter Niswander for Cowboys punting duties after the Cowboys released veteran Chris Jones last month after he spent 10 seasons with the organization

That move saved the Cowboys $2 million in total cash, with Jones counting for just $500,000 in dead money against the cap, per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. It's unknown what the Cowboys are paying Anger.

Anger, 32, was shockingly selected by Jacksonville in the third round of the 2012 draft. He was the NFL's punting yards leader in 2013 and spent four seasons with the Jaguars.

Anger then played three seasons in Tampa Bay and spent the last two years in Houston. He was released by the Texans on March 18.

Anger has been very durable throughout his nine-year career as he has missed just two out of a possible 144 games.

Niswander averaged 47.2 yards per punt in 2020, while Anger averaged 46.4 yards per punt with Houston last year.
