First Half & Flow
Detroit jumped out early and built a strong cushion. They led 32-25 after the first quarter and extended it to a 58-48 advantage at halftime. Memphis struggled offensively—shooting just 33% in the first half and coughing up a fair number of turnovers while Detroit was getting into the paint with ease.
Third Quarter Surge
The pivotal stretch came in the third quarter: Detroit went on a 21-4 run giving them a 21-point lead at 81-60. Memphis looked flat and Detroit’s physicality (notably inside) was wearing the Grizzlies down.
Memphis did mount a small rally to close the quarter on a 12-0 run, capped by a corner three from rookie Cedric Coward, which gave some hope heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter & Key Moments
In the final period Memphis looked to punch their way back in. At one point they trimmed the deficit to 103-100 with roughly 3:09 remaining. That’s when Detroit’s star guard Cade Cunningham took over: He scored 19 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter, including a stretch where he knocked off nine straight points for the Pistons to essentially seal the game.
But after the game, Ja Morant's comments following his return to the court after a one-game suspension due to "conduct detrimental to the team" are certain to be all the talk on 92.9 FM ESPN and throughout Memphis.
