According to Yahoo! Sports, the University of Memphis has turned to someone Memphis Athletic Director Dr. Ed Scott likely sees as a proven program-builder in Charles Huff as its new head football coach after Ryan Silverfield left for Arkansas. Huff arrives from Southern Miss following a remarkable one-year turnaround in Hattiesburg, where he lifted the Golden Eagles from 1-11 to 7-5 and secured their first winning season in three years. The 42-year-old brings a 39-25 career record and a strong reputation for player development, shaped by earlier stops at Penn State and Alabama, where he worked with stars like Saquon Barkley and Najee Harris.

Mack lost the final three games of the season this year at Southern Miss with one source in Hattiesburg citing that the quarterback was banged up and the team stopped forcing turnovers in those final three games.

Huff’s track record at Marshall, highlighted by a 10-3 Sun Belt title in 2024 and an upset of No. 8 Notre Dame, adds to Memphis’ confidence in its choice.

Fan reaction, however, has been split, with some hoping for a flashier hire. Still, supporters believe Huff’s culture-first approach can push Memphis to an American Conference Championship.
