Here are some game notes sent from the University of Memphis.
SETTING THE SCENE
• The University of Memphis will begin a four-game homestand on Saturday, Sept. 17 against Arkansas
State at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
• Memphis is 22-1 in the team’s last 23 non-conference home contests.
• The Tigers earned an AAC road win last week, defeating Navy, 37-13, in Annapolis, Md. at Navy-Marine
Corps Memorial Stadium.
• Quarterback Seth Henigan passed for 415 yards and two touchdowns to pace the offense, while
defensive back Quindell Johnson had 13 tackles and an interception for the Tigers.
• Memphis posted a record of 6-6 last season, earning the program’s eighth-straight bowl appearance.
• The Tigers were named the EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl Champions after Hawai’i was unable to participate.
• The eight-consecutive bowls streak is tied for the eighth-best in the nation and is the best among all
non-Power 5 programs.
SCOUTING ARKANSAS STATE
• After opening the season with a 58-3 win over Grambling State, the Red Wolves dropped a 45-12
contest on the road at No. 3/3-ranked Ohio State this past Saturday.
• A-State has yet to turn the ball over this season and ranks third in the NCAA in time of possession
(36:49).
• Prior to the year, Arkansas State was picked to finish sixth in the West Division of the Sun Belt.
• Linebacker Kivon Bennett, returner Johnnie Lang and wide receiver Te’Vailance Hunt were named
Preseason All-Sun Belt.
INSIDE THE SERIES
• The meeting between Memphis and Navy on Saturday will mark the 61st all-time game between the
two programs dating back to 1914.
• The Tigers hold a record of 31-24-5 over the Red Wolves all-time, including a mark of 23-11-4 at
Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
• Memphis has won three-straight over A-State, including a 55-50 victory in Jonesboro last season.
• Arkansas State has lost three-straight games in Memphis, with the last win (26-23) coming on Oct. 14,
2006.
• The Tiger offense was nearly unstoppable last year, asthe team racked up 680 total yards, including 417
yards passing and 263 yards rushing in the win. The 680 total yards were the most for the team since
gaining 703 in a win over UCF on Oct. 17, 2020.
• Quarterback Seth Henigan was tremendous, completing 22-of-33 passes for 417 yards and five
touchdowns. Running back Brandon Thomas rushed for a game-high 191 yards on just 18 carries with
two scores.
