Like many fans of the long-suffering franchise, free-agent righty Trevor Bauer is excited about the direction of the New York Mets under new owner Steve Cohen.
Or at least that's what his agent says.
Because of Bauer's social media might, his agent, Rachel Luba, has been thrust into the spotlight this offseason.
"New York is...well, he likes where the organization is going,” Luba told Deesha Thosar of The New York Daily News. “It can definitely be a landing spot.”
This is just the latest indication that Bauer is impressed by Cohen, as he posted a nearly 17-minute video to his YouTube channel last month praising the "brilliant" first impression that the new owner in Queens has made.
Bauer, who will turn 30 in January, is a free agent after winning the National League Cy Young Award in 2020. However, despite posting a minuscule 1.73 ERA in 11 regular season starts this past season, it doesn't appear the the Cincinnati Reds will be a serious threat to re-sign Bauer. The Reds have already non-tendered Archie Bradley and traded Raisel Iglesias to the Los Angeles Angels, two moves seen as attempts by the team to shed salary.
That said, if the Mets do ultimately choose to get aggressive in their pursuit of Bauer, they figure to face competition for his services.
The Angels are desperate not to waste any more of Mike Trout's historically-dominant prime. Joe Maddon's team has a lineup built around Trout and Anthony Rendon that's ready to compete for a World Series right now. The same can't be said about their starting rotation, which makes them an obvious fit for Bauer, a Los Angeles native.
Ultimately, Bauer, by design, is probably the least predictable player in the sport right now. You can bet he'll enjoy a few months of teams trying to woo him. By all accounts, though, the Mets are a legitimate threat to land the man that FanGraphs says has been the sixth-best pitcher in the sport over the last three seasons.
