ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - While there appears a potential possibility that Nolan Arenado could be heading down to Houston and become a member of the Astros, one Houston sports radio personality thinks the Astros trading for Arenado makes no sense from the Astros perspective.

Patrick Creighton, who cover Houston sports and is a radio host for SportsRadio 610 down in Houston, joined Matt Pauley on Sports Open Line and discussed Arenado and a potential trade down to Houston.

Creighton, says from the Astros perspective, a trade for Arenado "doesn't make sense."

"The Astros making a trade for Arenado makes about as much sense as if (Pauley) and I were to both leave our beautiful wives and go elope with inflatable Christmas blowups," said Creighton on Sports Open Line. "It's make no sense whatsoever and it's wild we're having this discussion."

Creighton says a trade for Arenado would go against everything the Astros "claim is their philosophy."

"Why do the Astros not want to pay Alex Bregman? Because they don't want to get stuck with the back three years of the contract where there's a lot of money and the production goes down," said Creighton. "

Creighton also cited the examples of the Astros letting Carlos Correa, George Springer, Dallas Keuchel, Gerrit Cole and Charlie Morton all walk to free agency over the last seven years as the Astros refusing to budge from their philosophy.

"What is Nolan Arenado? He's a guy on the back of that contract in the last three years with all that money and the declining production," said Creighton. "He literally in the part of the contract the Astros don't want in any of the guys they let go."

Creighton also argues the acquisitions of Cam Smith and Issac Paredes in the trade of Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs makes a trade for Nolan Arenado unnecessary since Smith, who reached Double-A last year in the Cubs farm system, is on the verge of reaching the majors within the next two years.

"It doesn't make sense when you just acquired your third-baseman of the future whose one year away," said Creighton.

Creighton also says since the Astros acquired Smith, a reunion with Bregman also doesn't make sense anymore too.

"If you bring in Bregman and you sign him for those six years, alright we're moving Paredes over to first-base, then what is Cam Smith doing?" said Creighton. "He learning to play the outfield? We know he can hit, we know he can play third-base, we have no idea if he can play the outfield."

"The deal you made with Kyle Tucker filled your third-base position starting next year for the next six years. So to bring in another guy whose going to be (in Houston) for multiple years, all that does is set back your timetable."
