ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Kolten Wong saw plenty of similar ovations in his time as the St. Louis Cardinals second baseman and on Thursday it was his turn. He was showered with 40-seconds of cheers from fans in his return to Busch Stadium.
As he stepped into the batter's box for the first time, he had tears in his eyes.
“I could barely see,” Wong said as he was walked on four pitches by Adam Wainwright.
And it was all thanks to catcher Yadier Molina stepping in front of the plate to make sure Wong got his special moment.
“You know, Waino was one of those guys where seeing him out there made me emotional,” Wong said after the game. “Seeing Yadi take those steps in the grass made me emotional. Just seeing things when you played with the Cardinals, you saw them do for other guys who played here. To be the guy in that box to witness that, it was pretty crazy."
Wong also was having a lot of fun before the game began, as he was seen throwing peanuts at some of his former teammates. He was on the top step of the dugout and hit players like Matt Carpenter as they rode by during the pre-game caravan:
