Oliver "Oli" Marmol was hired as manager 11 days after Shildt was relieved of his duties. Before the promotion of the Cardinals' former bench coach, Holliday reportedly had his agent reach out to St. Louis about the opening.

Although there were no reports of him being a leading candidate for the position, he was believed to have been an interesting option as a former player, who won a World Series in 2011 with St. Louis and is currently coaching college baseball at Oklahoma State University.

"I didn't want this to be about trying to beat them out, but if the Cardinals had interest in somebody like me, then I would have interest in managing an organization like the St. Louis Cardinals," Holliday told Fox 2.

He touted his near 2,000-career MLB games saying he "managed those games in my head" while playing.

"I think about the game through the eyes of a coach," Holliday says.

He is a volunteer assistant coach with OSU, focusing on hitting and outfield defense. His brother, Josh, is currently the head coach and their father, Tom, was an OSU’s assistant coach from 1978-1996 and head coach from 1997-2003.
