There are a lot of takes already going on regarding Sunday's Super Bowl. I get it, we all have to immediately dissect and analyze the game from multiple angles and then get our take on the Internet, radio or TV airways.
Here’s the deal, everyone today wants to rip on Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy Garoppolo and rightfully so. Shanahan once again blew a fouth-quarter lead by choosing to pass instead of run and Jimmy Garoppolo was average at best, much like he has been all year long.
San Francisco did literally everything right last night. They got a lead, they ran the ball well and they made Patrick Mahomes look average for three and a half quarters.
Mahomes looked terrible for the majority of that game. He was sacked four times, sent running for his life all night, and had a 61.6 QBR. It was a brutal night for Mahomes.
Think about it. If San Francisco doesn’t waste clock to end the first half and actually runs the ball in the fourth quarter they win that game.
Sure, Mahomes was special late, but he was special for like six minutes and was only allowed to be special because of bad 49ers coaching.
San Francisco had the perfect team, the perfect style, and even had a lead late. I mean that’s literally everything you can ask for when playing an all-time talent in Patrick Mahomes.
Yes, I get it, San Francisco lost the game. But if I’m an NFL GM today I’m telling my scouts to go copy the 49ers format. Great defense, elite pass rush and an elite running game.
Sure Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and Tyreek Hill are special. But the reason they are so special is because there is no trio out there like them.
Let me put it this way. The odds of your football team, (And that can be the Falcons or any other team in the NFL) having a QB, HC and WR trio like Mahomes, Reid and Hill are next to zero. However, with a couple of smart draft and free agency moves your team can easily become like the 49ers.
When building a franchise, getting your QB is always priority No. 1. However, with what I witnessed last night and what I’ve seen previously, I want a great defense and great running game ASAP.
Odds are your team will never have a generational talent like Patrick Mahomes an offensive genius like Andy Reid or the fastest WR in the NFL in Tyreek Hill.
The biggest takeaway from last night’s Super Bowl is not Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid or even Kyle Shanahan blowing it. The biggest takeaway is that defense and a great running game are still the key in a pass-happy modern NFL.
