The U.S. Women's National Team opened up its World Cup in France Tuesday with a 13-0 win over Thailand that set various records. They now hold the record for most goals scored in a Women's World Cup match, most goals scored in a half, and Alex Morgan tied the record for most goals in a game with five.
After the game ended the result and scoreline came under some scrutiny and the reaction to the blowout varied greatly.
The @USWNT whooped up on Thailand 13-nil. Some American fans upset we didn't call off the dogs. What are they supposed to do? Kick it out of bounds, play 4 corners? More candy ass generation nonsense.

June 11, 2019 After beating Thailand 13-0 & celebrating each goal #USWNT may have lost fans, domestically & internationally...and sealed themselves as villains of the @FIFAWWC. I love it. But the soccer gods can be cruel and vindictive. If US goes on to fail, their behavior will be on a loop.

June 12, 2019 With all due respect: did you see @alexmorgan13 last two goals and her last assist?!!! They were world class. And this isn’t rec league soccer. This is THE WORLD CUP!!!!!!!!! Stop judging these women with patriarchal glasses. You would never say this about a men’s team. Period. https://t.co/uuC8Y8uK0c

June 11, 2019 John Fricke and Hugh Douglas also addressed the scoreline and why they didn't have a problem with it.
"There's no mercy rule for a reason," said Fricke. "Goals count; it's a tiebreaker to get you to the next round."
