The Atlanta Braves placed pitcher Max Fried on the 10-Day injured list due to a left-side muscle spasm the team announced Tuesday.

On a conference call with the media Tuesday, Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos explained that Fried complained about the pain and the team wanted to see how he responded. Atlanta considering just bumping back his start one spot, but felt a stint on the Injured List was safer in the long run. Anthopoulos said Fried will be back no later than Sept. 18.

"We're extremely confident this will be short-lived," Anthopoulos said.

Anthopoulos also said the timetable for Cole Hamels returning to the team will affect when exactly Fried returns. Hamels may be ready by the upcoming Baltimore series .

Atlanta recalled right-hander Kyle Wright and activated reliever Jacob Webb from the 45-day IL. Charlie Culberson was also designated for assignment.

Fried has enjoyed a breakout season up until this point, posting a 1.98 ERA in nine starts for the Braves this season and has put him in the conversation for NL Cy Young.

As for whether Mike Foltynewicz can be an option for helping the rotation while Fried is out, Anthopoulos said that while Folty's work ethic has been off the charts, there is no timetable for his return to the Braves.
