As the Falcons offense has struggled and stalled at times during their current four game losing streak quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has started to be put under a microscope, and questions about his mechanics have begun to arise.
Why is he throwing off his back foot so much? Why does it look like he’s not moving his feet in the pocket at times? Well, earlier today The Morning Shift addressed the questions about Penix’s mechanics, and gave their thoughts as to why they seem to be off at times.
“It’s like first read, second read, third read, safety outlet, and he’s so late getting there at times that it forces that bad kind of footwork where he’s like oh my clock is late I can’t even afford time to move my feet and I’m just going to sling it out wide, and that’s when you go back and look at the Panthers that’s why you get the pick six, right, because you’re so late getting there and the mechanics are bad ” Mike Johnson said
Just like a pitcher in baseball, timing, rhythm, and mechanics are everything for an NFL quarterback, and the timing and rhythm aspect of it isn’t all on Michael Penix Jr. either.
The Falcons pass catchers and offensive line all have to be on the same page as him as well. The O-Line must give him the time he needs to throw, and his pass catchers have to be where he needs them to be and must be looking for the ball when he’s ready to throw.
When all parts of Atlanta’s offense are in sync the way they need to be there’s a good chance Michael Penix Jr.’s mechanics will be much improved.
