For Desmond Ridder it's about substance over style right now

Desmond Ridder’s performance on the field continues to be the hottest topic in Atlanta sports. Ridder is facing major scrutiny after the Falcons fell to 2-2 on Sunday losing to the Jaguars in London. Conversations about his benching were quickly silenced by Coach Arthur Smith, who confirmed he will be the starter this weekend at home vs Houston. Now the question becomes how can Smith and his coaching staff get the young signal caller back on track?

Ridder has shown flashes in the young season, but his main issue has been his ability to stand confidently in the pocket on a consistent basis. His offensive line has certainly not helped and has allowed 11 sacks in the last two contests. Pro Bowl Guard Chris Lindstrom did player better against the Jaguars, however, and now it’s up to the rest of the line to follow suit.

Dukes & Bell say for Ridder it’s about getting back to basics and making the type of plays that allow the offense to function even if it’s not in the flashiest way.

“With (former Falcons QB) Mike Vick at quarterback, that’s one thing. That is not this. But I don’t care about the style points. I just need substance and we’re not even getting that. We’re not even getting the norm substance stuff,” Carl Dukes explained.

Dukes is not expecting the Greatest Show on Turf or anything resembling the great offenses in NFL history. The Falcons have the playmakers that will shine if the quarterback can be a consistent delivery system. Perhaps the game plan this week vs Houston will be getting back to basics by running the ball with force to set up play-action passes and using Desmond Ridder’s athleticism to move the pocket and complete throws to their bevy of playmakers.
