Free agent safety Justin Simmons, a two-Time Pro Bowler at 30 years old, is in Flowery Branch for a second day today visiting with the Atlanta Falcons. After the injury to DeMarcco Hellams, the Falcons have a need at safety. If they want to add Simmons though, they're going to need to create more space under the salary cap, and there are a few options to do that.
If the Falcons want to create cap space without moving money into future seasons, they could look to trade a player or two, or potentially cut a player or two, but that still might not create enough room to add Simmons.
There are a few players who you could consider restructuring, but most of the high-priced contracts would be tough to restructure. The players you could move some money around likely wouldn't open up enough space to add Simmons.
The last option, which feels like it might be the option that would provide the money and space needed with just one move, would be to extend a player. The one that would make the most sense would be cornerback A.J. Terrell.
At the end of the day, if the Falcons want to add Simmons it will require a string of maneuvers. It's not just as simple as the Falcons want him and they can sign him.
