As training camp has progressed for the Atlanta Falcons there has been a lot of commentary about Michael Penix Jr.’s accuracy at times during practice, especially after their practice this past Friday where the Falcons’ second year quarterback reportedly went 8-for-21 on his passing in 11-on-11 work, and earlier today The Morning Shift explained why Falcons fans shouldn’t look too deep into Penix’s training camp stats.
“It’s so frustrating to read when you look at you know the things as far as Penix going 8 of 13 and the people going “ugh you know hey that’s not a good day”. You have no clue, you have no clue what he’s being asked to do, what the situation is, how many did he throw out of bounds in a two minute drill. There’s just not enough nuance to those conversations on social media.” Mike Johnson said
Beau agreed with Mike and explained why nobody should be taking any quarterback’s training camp stats too seriously.
“It’s not that big of a deal. I don’t know if it means anything good for your defense, or it means anything bad for your offense. I don’t know if I’d take anything away from it other than you would like to see them sharpen things.”
When fans or media members are watching training camp practice live it’s impossible as Mike mentioned to know what quarterbacks, including Michael Penix Jr., are being asked to do, what the situation is, if they’re having to throw balls away, if the receiver ran the wrong route, and you also have to take dropped passes into consideration as well.
There’s so many unknown and untold variables when it comes to quarterback training camp stats there’s just no point in getting too upset, too angry, or even too excited about them, so the next time you see Michael Penix Jr. 's training camp passing stats just take them with a grain of salt.
