Week 8 game vs. Panthers presents two extremes for Atlanta Falcons

It's easy to say "it's just one game", but the Week 8 matchup between the Falcons and Panthers may end being much more than that for Atlanta.

The Falcons, who sit at 3-4 and in the middle of a crowded group of NFC teams, feel with their upcoming schedule before their Week 14 bye that they can get into playoff contention, but that would require beating the Panthers first.

It's very easy to look at the Falcons schedule and envision at least 4 wins out of the next 6 games, even a 5-1 or 6-0 run isn't such a stretch that one can't imagine it, but for that to happen you have to beat the Panthers this Sunday first.

This one game is built on extremes for the Falcons season. If Atlanta wins, it starts a run of winnable games, but if the Falcons fall to the Panthers, why would anyone think they could beat the remaining teams on this pre-bye stretch.

The Panthers looked improved in a win over the Bucs on Sunday, as did the Commanders as they knocked off the Packers. Last night we saw a Bears team that went on the road and beat New England.

What began as a 6-game schedule that could result in 4 or 5 wins looks much more daunting today than it did just a few days ago, and the result of the first game, at home against the Panthers, could send the Falcons season one of two ways, both very different extremes.
