When Arthur Smith was hired as Atlanta Falcons Head Coach in 2021, he arrived with a simple, establish the run offensive philosophy that Falcons are still working hard to create as they enter year two under his leadership.
Last year the Falcons signed RB Mike Davis in free agency in hopes he would provide a combination of power running and pass catching ability out of the backfield, but that experiment failed miserably and ultimately lead to Davis being released in the off season.
RB/WR Cordarrelle Patterson will once again split his snaps between the backfield as well as at receiver to take advantage of his many skill sets, so that means the battle for the true feature back role is up for grabs?
“Everyone says this running back by committee is kind of the new thing in the NFL” commented AtlantaFalcons.com writer Scott Blair when he joined the Morning Show with John and Hugh live from Falcons training camp at Flowery Branch.
The Falcons have three candidates battling for the title of feature back in returning veteran Qadree Ollison, free agent signee Damien Williams, and rookie 5th round pick Tyler Allgeier, who Scott believes could win the job with an impressive camp and pre-season.
“I am very intrigued to see if his skill set and level of physicality translate to the NFL level” explained Blair when describing why he is looking forward to watching Allgeier in the preseason.
Can the rookie when the job, or will one of the veterans prove that experience matters?
Just another position battle to keep close eyes on as the Falcons get prepared for the regular season.
