Last night Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Raheem Morris released a statement announcing that rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will be the teams’ starting quarterback moving forward, and with the eighth overall pick out of Washington bringing more mobility to the quarterback position than Kirk Cousins did, earlier today on The Morning Shift, the crew asked Owner of Football Gameplan, TV Host, and college football and NFL analyst Emory Hunt what team and quarterback will the Falcons and Penix resemble now that Penix is the starter, and Emory believes the Falcons will look similar to a team that they’ve actually played and lost to already this season.
“The Seattle Seahawks with Geno Smith, and you know you factor in they both have about similar athleticism. Geno does a great job at the intermediate level of the field, he throws with a lot of velocity, I think Michael Penix at this juncture of his career probably has a little more touch on the deep ball that’s what we saw from him at Washington, but when you think about a Drake London, Darnell Mooney who’s been playing really well, Ray-Ray McCloud, the speed guy that can stretch the defense, and also Kyle Pitts I feel like they can really throw the football better with a Penix in and it would look a lot like what Seattle does because Seattle also has a two-headed monster in the backfield, and I feel like the Falcons do have just that with Tyler Allgeier and Bijan Robinson.” Emory Hunt said.
The Seahawks currently rank third in the NFL in passing yards, 14th in the NFL in scoring, and Geno Smith in 14 games has 3,623 passing yards, has a 69% completion rate, and has thrown 14 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.
Now, hopefully Michael Penix Jr. isn’t throwing as many interceptions as Geno Smith has, but all of the other production numbers wouldn’t be too bad, and even though the Falcons’ offense will probably score more than 22.5 points per game if Michael Penix Jr. is playing well that wouldn’t be too bad of a number either for an offense being led by a rookie quarterback.
