Atlanta United left our nation’s capital with three points this weekend, but the thrill of victory has quickly been replaced with dread as injuries are beginning to pile up for the Five Stripes.
The club announced this afternoon that Osvaldo Alonso suffered a torn ACL during the match against D.C. United and Matheus Rossetto will miss approximately 2-4 weeks with a left hamstring injury. According to the team, Alonso’s timeline has yet to be determined.
While he didn’t show any signs of injury Saturday, superstar Josef Martinez is now traveling to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) for re-examination on his right knee after “expressing recent discomfort.” UPMC is the facility where Martinez had the same knee repaired following an ACL tear in 2020—an injury that had him contemplating retirement at one point during his recovery.
The injury news will take some wind out of their sails but Atlanta United will be forced to regroup quickly as they get set for a trip to Charlotte this Sunday.
Atlanta took the first matchup between the two clubs that are seemingly destined to become rivals due to proximity and the presence of the two of MLS’s largest fanbases.
