“I just think he’s [Giorgos Giakoumakis] the best pure goal-scorer this team has ever had as far as how he creates,” Beau Morgan said.

Beau had no hesitation when making that statement Monday, and didn’t mince words when giving his explanation either. “He [Josef Martinez] had to be fed and he was right there and that’s why he was always around, he had to be right there on the goal. Giakoumakis can do it from anywhere,” Morgan said

Beau also said he believed Martinez played “in the box” more which he made a point to emphasize was not a critique of Martinez, and went on to say “he was a great player here.” But does think at times Martinez was a “cherry-picker.”

However, the new No. 7 is far from a cherry-picker as he has scored from a multitude of different spots on the pitch, and has put goals in the back of the net in a lot of different ways as well. The versatility of Giakoumakis’ attack is the reason why he now co-leads the MLS in goals scored and has a great chance to win the golden boot this season.

Giakoumakis just got to Atlanta, so we can’t even begin to talk about his legacy with the Five Stripes because his story in Atlanta has just begun. Martinez brought the city an MLS Cup, so nobody is saying Giakoumakis is the greatest player to ever put on a Five Stripes kit. But when we talk about a pure goal-scorer you can’t deny what Giakoumakis has done.
