Atlanta United have been the darlings in Atlanta sports ever since its inception. They took the city by storm by winning the MLS cup in 2018. Winning a championship in just their second year, in a city who was starved a championship, raised the level of expectations for United going forward.
Looking at where United is right now, they aren't the same team that they once were. The have a new manager in Gabriel Heinze; their best player, Josef Martinez, is coming off of a torn ACL, and no one is talking about this club being a legitimate contender.
Jon Chuckery believes that some criticism should be warranted given the standard that was set by this team. "It hasn't been the same since then" Chuckery said. The one thing about having early success is that once you start not to meet expectations, then that's when the questioning starts to come.
Let's just hope United deal with the questions, and try to get back to competing for the ultimate prize.
