Julian Edelman isn’t slamming the door shut on returning to the NFL.

Bill Belichick’s response: Don’t ask me about it.

Edelman made waves last week when he went on the Rich Eisen Show and didn’t completely dismiss the idea of making a midseason return to the NFL.

"Hey, you never say never," Edelman said. "But I’m excited for the opportunities I have coming on my plate right now. If any of those situations come up, of course you’ve got to take a look at them."

Hardly a firm commitment either way, but it’s perhaps the biggest sign yet that a return to football isn’t completely out of the question.

Edelman in the past has said he is a “one-team guy” in response to theories that he’d join Tom Brady with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That means it would be New England or bust, but the Patriots head coach unsurprisingly wouldn’t tip his hand when asked on “The Greg Hill Show” about the rumors.

“I’ve talked to Julian, I talk to him fairly regularly,” Belichick said. “So, yeah, I don’t know about him talking to Rich Eisen and all that. You’d have to ask Julian about that, but I don’t know.”

Currently, Edelman is building his brand as a media member, so it’s not as if he needs to go back to football. That said, he’s 36 and was a productive player at the end of his career when healthy, so if he’s at full strength and willing to ramp up for a mid-to-late-season return, one has to think the Patriots would be interested.

Just don’t expect Belichick to cross that bridge until he needs to.
