On Tuesday, the veteran signal-caller further fueled speculation that his time in Washington could be coming to a close after he posted what appeared to be a goodbye missive on social media.

Wentz, writing on Instagram, noted that this past season was an "adventure" and reflected on his relationships with coaches and teammates that "will last a lifetime."

"Year 7 was an adventure and didn't end the way we all wanted," Wentz said. "Yet, I'm grateful for another year to play this game and more importantly grateful for the people I got work with all year. Such a fun, unique group of guys and some relationships were built that will last a lifetime! Lots of memories, fun, laughs, and highs & lows, but I praise God for the opportunity once again and the journey along the way. #A01"

Wentz's first -- and perhaps only -- season in Washington did not go as either he or the team would have hoped.

Acquired last offseason in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts, Wentz played in just eight games after fracturing a finger against the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football in Week 6. He was activated nearly two months later, on December 12, but initially remained backup to Taylor Heinicke.

Wentz was reinstated as starter for a pair of crucial late-season losses in Weeks 16 and 17, against the 49ers and Browns, respectively. With the Commanders eliminated from playoff contention, Wentz was inactive for the team's win over the Dallas Cowboys in the season finale.

Wentz's disappointing season has prompted speculation that he could be one-and-done in Washington, just as he was with the Colts. The former second overall draft pick landed in Indianapolis after the Eagles decided to turn to Jalen Hurts as their starting quarterback.

With Wentz facing the prospect of yet another team declining to retain his services, some have wondered whether his days in the NFL are numbered.
