Jack Del Rio appears to have escaped a tumultuous week with his job as Washington Commanders defensive coordinator intact.
Moving forward, it appears that the 59-year-old will be keeping his political takes to himself, as he's deleted his Twitter account.
After initially discussing the matter on Twitter, Del Rio drew a false equivalency between the protests that emerged after George Floyd was murdered by police officer Derek Chauvin and the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol when meeting with the media.
"Let’s get right down to it, what did I ask?" Del Rio said when asked about his Twitter activity last Wednesday. "A simple question: Why are we not looking into those things? Because it’s kind of hard for me to say I can realistically look at it, I see the images on TV, people’s livelihoods are being destroyed, businesses are being burned down -- no problem.
"And then we have a dustup at the Capitol, nothing burned down and we’re gonna make that a major deal. I just think it’s kind of two standards."
Del Rio was later fined $100,000 for referring to the insurrection -- which left four dead -- as "a dust up." The money will be given to the U.S. Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
Before deleting his Twitter account, Del Rio did issue the following apology:
Additionally, head coach Ron Rivera said in a statement that "our organization will not tolerate any equivalency between those who demanded justice in the wake of George Floyd's murder and the actions of those on Jan. 6 who sought to topple our government."
