While Georgia quarterback Carson Beck may no longer be considered a Heisman Trophy favorite in the eyes of some, Kirby Smart has ‘seen’ more than enough from the senior quarterback during his time in Athens for the Dawgs head coach to remain “confident in him” to be the leader of their offense.
“He’s seen so much, he’s had so many reps and I just have a lot of trust and confidence in him,” Smart told Steak Shapiro and Rusty Mansell on Thursday when he joined them on The Steakhouse and explained why despite Beck having his worst statistical performance of the season against Texas, throwing for 175 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions, he “still believes” in his QB1.
“I mean he’s had some throws that I know he wishes he’d take back and he admits that, but when it comes down to it, I still believe in this guy and believe in him and our system and the players around him," Smart said. "They have tremendous resilience."
As Smart continued, he praised his team for its ability to overcome in-game setbacks as Mansell asked him to share his thoughts on Beck's completion to Arian Smith for a first down after Georgia was facing a 3rd and 12 on a drive that led to their final touchdown on the night.
“I don’t know what the stats are, but it seems like every time we have to have a drive, we have a drive," Smart said. "We had to have a drive against Auburn and Mississippi State, he comes up with a drive. He did that last year, and that was one of those moments that it didn’t start out great that drive. We’d lost all momentum but he threw a strike on third down and that was a big play.”
