Although Georgia has been known as a football state over the years, it’s claim to be one of the country’s top producer of basketball talent is starting to be seen as the NBA draft has seen at least one player from the peach state go in the first round the past few years. In Wednesday’s 2020 draft, three more players from Georgia were selected in the first round with Anthony Edwards, who played high school basketball at Holy Spirit Prep and Therrell High School, being selected number one overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Edwards, the first number one pick out of Georgia since Kwame Brown back in 2001, played one year with the Georgia Bulldogs before entering the draft. Joining Edward as first round selections is former McEachern standout, Isaac Okoro, who played one season with Auburn before making the jump. Okoro was taken with the fifth pick in the draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers where he will join former Pebblebrook player, Colin Sexton, who was taken with the eight pick of the draft back in 2018. Taken with the 11th pick of the 2020 draft by the San Antonio Spurs was Devin Vassell (Florida State), who played high school ball at Peachtree Ridge. In the 2019 draft, Chuma Okeke, who played for Westlake High School and Langston Hughes High School, was selected 16th by the Orlando Magic and in the 2018 draft, Chicago’s Wendell Carter Jr., who played for Pace Academy, was take ahead of Sexton with the seventh overall pick by the Bulls.
