Just over two months ago, the Atlanta Braves celebrated a World Series title with a parade as an estimated 400,000 fans filled the streets. While Athens is about an hour outside of the metro area, Thomas Mott says that a Georgia Bulldog victory in Monday night’s national title game could be followed by an even bigger celebration.
“If they can actually win this game on Monday, I just can’t imagine the excitement. Dare we say, it’s bigger than a Braves championship?…The Braves championship was something special. A Georgia championship, I think, would be even more so and the fact that both would happen essentially in the same season would be one of the most incredible things to happen in Atlanta sports in a very long time," he said.
Mott added that the opponent—the Alabama Crimson Tide—would play a role in the historic nature of the potential championship.
“If the Dawgs are able to—after being number one all year & getting embarrassed in the SEC title game—come back and beat Alabama in the National Championship Game and win their first natty since 1980, this will be one of the great titles that we’ve seen in the city of Atlanta and really in the state of Georgia,” Mott said.
The Crimson Tide have had the Dawgs’ number in recent years with UGA’s last win in the series occurring back in 2007—Nick Saban’s first season in Tuscaloosa. Since then, Alabama is 7-0 against UGA including three wins in SEC Championship games and the 2018 National Championship Game.
So, will UGA’s fortune change on Monday night? Thomas doesn’t think so as he predicted that Bama will win by a 31-21 final score.
