National Signing Day used to be considered a holiday on the calendar of College Football fans. A day in which live video feeds focused on fax machines were aired nationally, and to some extent they still are, but does it still hold the same power it once did?

What once was excitement about seeing a 5-star select your school over a rival has turned into wondering how long he'll even be on campus for if he doesn't play freshman year.


The transfer portal has ruled both National Signing Day and recruiting rankings irrelevant as players move around before they ever have an impact at their original school.

As fans try to feign optimism and excitement for the life choices made today, they know in the back of their minds that more-than-a-few top prospects will be elsewhere before the start of their sophomore season.

Can National Signing Day regain the glory it once held? Maybe. But it won't happen while the transfer portal holds just as much significance in schools rebuilding or reloading as adding high school recruits.
