Are rivalries in college football becoming a thing of the past?

As the college football landscape continues to change, more of what used to be is seeming to become less of a thing as conference realignment continues to reshape the landscape resulting in changes like longstanding rivalries no longer happening and conversations surrounding the potential of conference championships ending taking place and talks to expand the College Football Playoffs continue.

“You’re going to eliminate the SEC Championship game,” Mike Griffith of Dawg Nation and AJC.com said as he joined 92-9 The Game’s Carl Dukes and Mike Bell to explain why he believes expanding the CFP to 24 teams is a logical move when considering the revenue generating aspect.

“I hate to say it, it’s been great in Atlanta, it’s wonderful, but it doesn’t fit and it’s not fair to the teams that are at the top of the league to play the extra game,” Griffith continued as he shared why he believes some traditions in college football may need to come to an end in order for CFP expansion to be successful.

“If you’re going to expand the playoffs to 16, 24 teams, it’s a given that you’re going to eliminate the SEC Championship game, especially after the league agreed to go to a nine-game schedule and play a Power-4 conference team outside the league,” Griffith said, adding, “with that game gone, you have to replace the revenue that you generated on SEC Championship game weekend and the way to do that is with two play-in games,”.
