Jack Del Rio apologized Wednesday for referring to the Jan. 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol as a 'dust-up,' calling his own prior words "irresponsible" and "negligent."
"I made comments earlier today in referencing the attack that took place on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021," the Commanders defensive coordinator wrote on Twitter. "Referencing that situation as a dust-up was irresponsible and negligent and I am sorry. I stand by my comments condemning violence in communities across the country.
"I say that while also expressing my support as an American citizen for peaceful protest in our country. I have fully supported all peaceful protests in America. I love, respect, and support all my fellow coaches, players, and staff that I work with and respect their views and opinions."
Del Rio spoke at length earlier Wednesday about remarks he'd made on Twitter comparing the Capitol riot to protests in the summer of 2020 that were sparked by the death of George Floyd.
"What did I ask? A simple question," Del Rio said, in part. "Why are we not looking into those things? If we're gonna talk about it, why are we not looking into those things? Because it's kind of hard for me to say I can realistically look at it, I see the images on TV: people's livelihoods are being destroyed, businesses are being burned down — no problem. And then we have a dust-up at the Capitol — nothing burned down — and we're not gonna talk about, we're gonna make that a major deal."
Del Rio opened those remarks by stating that anything he says or writes, he'd be "comfortable saying or writing in front of everybody that I work with, players and coaches," while also affirming his right to freely express himself as an American.
