Jets’ Denzel Mims formally requests trade: ‘It’s just time’

Denzel Mims, who has scored all of zero touchdowns in his two NFL seasons, is still a New York Jet, though maybe not for much longer. The disgruntled wide receiver has requested a trade, releasing the following statement through his agent, Ron Slavin.

Despite elite college production (he earned all-conference honors at Baylor his senior year) and strong measurables (he ran a 4.38 at 6’3/207), Mims has yet to pan out in the NFL, securing just 31 catches for 490 yards on 67 career targets. Mims has again been a non-factor this summer, playing with the twos in Monday night’s preseason game. He snagged three catches for 43 yards against Atlanta, but was also responsible for an interception on a pass that arguably should have been caught.

Clearly uninterested in a backup/special teams role, it’s hard to see where Mims fits within the offense, especially with first-round rookie Garrett Wilson usurping him on the Jets’ depth chart. The underachieving 24-year-old may benefit from a change of scenery, though it’s doubtful the Jets would get much of a return for him, likely settling for pennies on the dollar (aka a late-round pick).

Mims arrived in East Rutherford with high expectations but has never quite lived up to them, battling injuries while showing little chemistry with quarterback Zach Wilson. Roster and coaching turnover are at least partially to blame, though if Mims was ever going to make an impact in New York, it probably would have happened by now.
