Michigan head coach Juwan Howard has been suspended for the remainder of the season after getting into a physical altercation with Wisconsin assistant Joe Krabbenhoft after Sunday’s game.

The Big Ten made the announcement on Monday that Howard will miss the final five games of the regular season and will also be fined $40,000.

Several others were disciplined for their role in the brawl as well, including one-game suspensions for Michigan players Terrance Williams II and Moussa Diabate.

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard was fined $10,000 for his role while Wisconsin player Jahcobi Neath will serve a one-game suspension.

Krabbenhoft, the recipient of Howard’s swing, was not disciplined.

The altercation began in the handshake line following a 77-63 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers after Howard appeared to try and snub Gard of a shake, citing he was upset with a late timeout when the game was already out of reach.

Gard grabbed Howard and the two began shouting at one another, with Howard telling Gard not to touch him.

Coaches and players came in to separate the two in an attempt to de-escalate things, but Howard reached across the scrum and took a swing at Krabbenhoft, who appeared to be shouting something in Howard’s direction.

That’s when things began to unravel and players began shoving and taking swings at one another.

Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren released a statement on the suspensions:

“Our expectation is the incident yesterday will provide our coaches and student-athletes with the opportunity to reflect, learn and move forward in a manner that demonstrates decorum and leadership on and off the court.”
