After "mutually parting ways" with head football coach Les Miles, University of Kansas Director of Athletics Jeff Long denied any prior knowledge of sexual harassment allegations against the former LSU head coach.
Long told reporters in a press conference on Tuesday that when he hired Miles in 2018, the university conducted multiple background checks and asked Miles if there was anything that could “embarrass” the program. Miles told him no.
Despite Miles lying about his past, the head coach is still receiving a $2 million payout on the remaining $8 million left on his contract, per the Kansas City Star.
Miles’ contract states that he could be fired for “just cause” and is not entitled to any remaining salary for “discreditable conduct that is inconsistent with the professional standards of a head coach of a collegiate sports team.”
Long, whose relationship with Miles extends back decades, said it was “debatable” whether or not Miles had actually lied to him.
Miles and Kansas “mutually parted ways” on Monday after the head coach was put on administrative leave following sexual harassment allegations stemming from his time as LSU’s head coach in 2013.
LSU’s investigation of Miles showed emails from former athletic director Joe Alleva that Miles should be fired for his conduct, which included accusations of kissing a female student, “unwanted touching” and suggesting that she go back to his condo with him.
LSU employees told investigators that Miles also insisted the athletic department hire “attractive, blonde, fit” women to work in recruiting.
Miles denied any misconduct or inappropriate behavior and his only punishment was an official “letter of reprimand” and barred from hiring student faculty as babysitters or being alone with female students.
